Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera La Traviata from the Royal Opera House – Cinema at Rialto

La traviata tells the story of the tragic love between the courtesan Violetta and the romantic Alfredo Germont. Played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society, Alfredo and Violetta’s love threatens to shame his family. When his father directly appeals to Violetta to relinquish her one chance of happiness, Violetta submits and her act of self-sacrifice leads to her paying the ultimate price. Verdi’s beautiful score contains some of his most inspired arias and duets, including Violetta’s joyous Sempre libera, in her poignant and passionate encounters with Alfredo and Germont. The superficial glamour of 19th-century Paris contrasts with scenes of great intimacy, culminating in the memorable, heart-breaking final act. Director: Richard Eyre Conductor: Giacomo Sagripanti Cast: Pretty Yende/Angel Blue, Anush Hovhannisyan/Stephen Costello/Dmytro Popov, Dimitri Platanias/Vladimir Stoyanov.
